Wake Up Each Day With a Purpose

Author: Dr. Julie. Sorenson, DMFT, MA, LPC

The importance of waking up each day with a purpose is crucial. Everyone needs a purpose and those who struggle with depression often have difficulties doing things because they may not feel they have a purpose. The problem is that some people believe their purpose must be grandiose, like performing brain surgery, getting into a university, or nailing that job. While people who perform brain surgery, get into a university or nail their dream job are important, not everyone can do those things or be on that path and that’s okay. What people need to realize is you can look at everyday tasks as purposes. Examples being “Today my purpose is to gets the laundry done” or “Going to the grocery store will be my purpose today.”

Struggling with depression can be difficult in some cases debilitating. It may be difficult to get up or out of bed. However, if you work on changing your mindset it can help you have better days. Saying things like “I have an opportunity to go to work today” instead of “I have to go to work today” or “I am lucky enough to have woken up” instead of “I had to get up” are a few ways to tweak your vocabulary and trick your mind in believing it won’t be so bad.

Sometimes life can be a bumpy ride but it’s all in your mindset on how you handle things or react to things. You get to choose your mood. Yes, sometimes something bad happens that you will have to problem solve to get through. However, most days don’t have to feel bad, and you get to choose how you look at things. Try having a morning mantra or reminding yourself of things you are grateful for. Gratitude has statistically proven to:
